For an electric outboard, compare the complete propulsion system and the conditions behind its range claims. Motor power, battery energy and distance travelled describe different things. A large number on one specification line does not answer how far your loaded boat will go.

Separate power from stored energy

Power is commonly stated in watts or kilowatts. Battery energy is commonly stated in watt-hours or kilowatt-hours. For a simple illustration, 1 kWh of usable energy divided by a steady 0.5 kW draw gives two hours before accounting for reserve and other constraints. That arithmetic is not a range prediction or a claim about a particular battery.

Actual usable capacity, operating conditions and system limits matter. Distance also depends on speed over the route. Plan an appropriate reserve with the manufacturer or a qualified marine professional rather than treating a theoretical runtime as a safe journey limit.

Ask what was tested

Mercury publishes Avator 7.5e runtime and range examples with a named test boat and throttle conditions, and notes the effects of boat type, load and environment. When comparing another model, ask for similarly clear test conditions. Do not transfer one boat’s results to your hull.

  • What hull and load were used?
  • At what operating setting was the result measured?
  • How many batteries, and which exact models?
  • What conditions and reserve assumptions apply?
  • Does the route include current, wind or an exposed return trip?

Price every required component

List the motor, compatible batteries, charger, controls, cabling and any required system hub. Check which are included in the seller’s offer. Mercury’s Avator 20e and 35e configurations illustrate how battery and system requirements can vary within a product family. Never assume a motor-only listing is a ready-to-use kit.

Check the charging routine

Confirm charger compatibility, supply requirements and the time needed for your intended battery configuration. Consider where charging and storage will occur, following the battery manufacturer’s temperature and handling instructions. A system that meets a weekend trip requirement may still be inconvenient if it cannot be recharged between planned outings.

Browse marine equipment after assembling the system checklist. Compare the full installed load using our outboard-weight guide, and use the repower budget guide to capture installation and supporting equipment.
